Bodhi Baby

Sometimes parents want the name of the baby reflected in the card and they tell me (top, top secret!) so I can create it.

And sometimes they only tell me the elements of the card, and that is enough to work with. Then they tell me the baby's name after the birth, when I finish up the card.

In this case, I knew the elements: a hummingbird and a leaf of the holy Bodhi tree. and after he was born I learned the baby's name was also Bodhi.

Here is the sketch:

Before I knew what kind of typography would work.

My first sketch was more painterly, a digital ink drawing of a hummingbird visiting a bodhi flower.

But the parents preferred the cleaner drawing of the bird arising from a single leaf like a shimmer of light.
